Architects in London
Commonbond Architects undertakes a wide range of projects across London, including private homes, new build houses, community buildings, and small creative studios. Our work is grounded in a careful reading of place, programme, and material, producing architecture that is both considered and practical.
We work with private clients, developers, and organisations commissioning buildings for living, working, and making.
Working across London, our projects are shaped by an understanding of the city’s layered fabric and the everyday lives that unfold within it. We approach each project as a specific response to its surroundings, balancing spatial clarity, environmental performance, and long-term usability.
Projects and Context
Much of our London work involves the careful transformation of existing buildings, finding ways to improve how spaces are used rather than simply adding more area. Residential retrofit projects, such as a recent homes in Islington and Brixton explore how light, circulation, and structure can be reworked to support contemporary living within established settings.
Alongside this, we design extensions, loft conversions, and family homes that respond closely to their surroundings, balancing planning constraints with generous internal spaces. Our work in Dulwich demonstrates how additions can be integrated quietly and coherently, strengthening the relationship between house, garden, and everyday life.
We also undertake new-build housing, including small developments where context, density, and environmental performance must be carefully balanced. A housing development in Greenwich that is currently under construction, reflects our experience of working at multiple scales, informed by previous work on larger residential schemes.

Design Process
Projects begin with careful research into the site, its context, and the client brief. We work through sketching, modelling, and iterative testing, allowing proposals to develop through discussion and refinement. This approach supports projects that are precise yet flexible, responding to both practical constraints and lived experience.
Our process is collaborative and transparent. Clients are closely involved as designs evolve, with decisions shaped through conversation rather than predetermined solutions. This allows projects to remain responsive, precise, and appropriate to their context.
Environmental responsibility informs our work throughout. We advocate for efficient use of materials, durable construction, and low carbon strategies where appropriate, always considering how buildings perform over time as well as how they are experienced. Natural materials play an important role in our work, valued for their tactile qualities, longevity, and environmental performance. Creative studio projects, including an artists’ studio in Bexley currently on site, allow us to explore these ideas in focused, material-led ways.
Early conversations are often the most productive, and we are happy to discuss projects at feasibility or briefing stage.

Working in London
From our Gardenhide studio in Abbey Wood, a timber-framed hempcrete building completed as a self-build project, we understand London’s planning, construction, and regulatory contexts. This experience informs how we approach projects across the city, particularly where heritage, neighbours, and complex sites shape the design process. We support clients through all stages of a project, from early feasibility and concept design through planning and construction.
Our projects are developed with close attention to detail and an understanding of how buildings are made. Garden studios and small workspaces, such as a current project in Muswell Hill, reflect our interest in well-made, adaptable spaces that support creative and domestic life alike. We collaborate with local consultants and contractors to ensure design intent is carried through to completion, resulting in architecture that is coherent, durable, and carefully resolved.
Commissioning an Architect in London
Commonbond Architects offers a bespoke, tailored service with director-level involvement throughout every project. Early conversations are central to our approach, allowing clients to make informed decisions about layout, materials, and environmental performance from the outset.
Whether commissioning a home, a retrofit project, or a small development, our aim is to produce architecture that is coherent, carefully detailed, and responsive to its setting. We seek to create buildings that work hard, age well, and offer lasting pleasure to those who use them.
